Reasons to Homeschool High School
I have lots of reasons to homeschool high school, but that could fill a book. I thought I’d share my family’s top 3 reasons to homeschool high school. These are also some of the same ideas that I’ve heard from the families I’ve served as academic advisor over the years.
1) Time to develop their character and personality.
Our family concentrated character and personality development into the many electives they did over high school:
- personal discovery and development in Career Exploration

- leadership and social skills training (I secretly repeated the lessons from Social Skills that they learned as kids- wove the skills into daily discussions about how to interact in groups and with friends, and read John Maxwell books)
- confidence development with Speech, lots of service hours
- thinking and questioning skills in Philosophy and World History
- religious identity development (prayer skills and Apologetics)
- financial stewardship (Sara’s awesome Financial Literacy course)
2) Time to develop interests.
Each of my kids had time to delve deeply into their interests.
- Photography courses at the community college
- Computer programming courses at home

- Cinematography club with the homeschool group
- History and leadership organizations in the homeschool group
- Choirs, music lessons, and bands in the homeschool group
3) Time to develop strengths.
My kids leveled up their courses in areas of giftedness- especially Language Arts, history, and social sciences (Psychology, Human Development) because it added power to their transcripts.

4) BONUS Reason! Time to develop real-life skills.
Homeschool high schoolers need to graduate prepared for life. One of the most important skills is Financial Literacy (one of 7Sisters most popular texts).
