Homeschool Highschool Podcast Episode 47: Using Movies as Curriculum
There are LOTS of reasons to make movies part of your homeschool highschool curriculum!
Are you wondering if that’s legit? Can you really count movies as curriculum? Savvy homeschool moms can!
Join Sabrina and her homeschool-graduate son, Sam for a lively discussion of Movies as Curriculum. Sam studied filmmaking in highschool and college. He and Sabrina how movies can:
- enliven literature and history education
- build critical thinking skills
- make education more interesting
Homeschool high schoolers can use movies as literature for Language Arts credit. (Of course, movies cannot be the ONLY literature they experience in high school. They need lots of different kinds of reading, geared to their needs, interests and abilities.)
To make sure that a cinema studies course can actually count as Language Arts, be sure your course includes:
- A thoughtful watching (or two) of the movie
- An examination of at least one literature theme
- Comprehension questions
- Writing component (with editing their own paper, to keep skills sharp)
Our teens have loved using movies as part of their high school Language Arts experiences. The study guides in 7Sisters Cinema Studies series is what made it right for them, because of the elements (just listed above) included in the learning process.
