Our Co-op only meets once a week. Are the lessons setup week-by-week, so they are easy to send work home and then get together and go over it once a week? Are these lessons setup like your Intro to Literature?
Hi Kim,
We tried to make the set-up flexible to fit various co-op styles. A weekly co-op is an easy fit, as is a bi-weekly. For groups who meet MORE often than weekly, we’ve included extra practice activities that are optional. The homework is typically to watch the Videos for the upcoming lesson and complete the accompanying Video Eval sheet, and then for multi-lesson projects (some of the speeches require an extra week for research and on-your-own practice), the additional homework would be to complete what was begun in co-op at the last meeting.
If you purchase the curriculum and are confused about how to make it best fit your group, email me! [email protected]
And, as with all 7Sisters curriculum, you can ask for a refund anytime a title isn’t a good fit for your needs — we’ll be happy to return your money, no questions asked.
The homeschool curriculum I use requires a public speaking course in 11th grade, but the course they offer, 38 Basic Speech Experiences, will be too difficult (I believe) for my son who is on the Autism Spectrum and who struggles with writing. I am looking for an alternative that still gives him the basics, satisfies the requirement, and yet is hopefully not as strenuous. Can you tell me if your course might be suitable for someone with ASD? Thank you!
Good question, Octavia. As you know there is a broad spectrum of abilities with young people with ASD. Our speech curriculum is very parent-involved and contains little writing. If you did the curriculum, I would suggest adapting lessons to meet his needs (leave out videos or discussion if those aren’t of interest to him). Here’s a link to excerpts so you can get a glimpse. Contact me for more ideas, if it would help. [email protected]
Hello. Our homeschool co-op is using this curriculum next year and I hope to register my son for the class but he has middle-school level writing skills. Do you think the assignments would be too difficult? Thanks.
I don’t think your son will find this too difficult; there is one topic (presenting a biographical speech) that requires writing a report that forms the basis for the speech he will give, but with a little coaching from someone older, he shouldn’t even find this to be too much.
The Speech curriculum CAN be used with a single student; it is more fun with a group, but the exercises can be carried out in individual study if you prefer.
That is a great question. There isn’t a standardized curriculum requirement for Speech so it is not possible to actually assign a credit amount to the text. We suggest you log the hours your teen spends with the assignments. Most of our local teens have earned .25-1 full credit according to the amount of effort and time they invest in the course. Here’s a post on how to decide credit amounts. http://7sistershomeschool.com/homeschool-high-school-transcript-how-to-earn-credits/

Thank you 🙂 I’m excited for him to start the class next year.
Does this have to be taught in a class setting, or will it work for one student in a homeschool?

Is this a .5 credit course for high school?
